FAQ
FAQ

Black Cumin Extract (INCI: Nigella Sativa Extract, CAS 90064-32-7) is an aqueous plant extract from Nigella sativa for the cosmetics and food industries. Unlike black cumin seed oil, the extract contains the water-soluble constituents of the plant, including flavonoids, saponins and polysaccharides, and is free from essential oils.
Production
CONIUNCTA produces the Black Cumin Extract in Germany. It is obtained by aqueous extraction using AVE technology (Adaptive Vacuum Extraction). The extract content is approx. 30 percent: 1 kg of extract contains the hydrophilic constituents of approx. 35 g of dried or approx. 220 g of fresh plant material. Glycerin or water with Propylene Glycol or Pentylene Glycol are available as carriers; preservation is glycol-based. The raw material comes from Europe and the rest of the world, with certified organic material preferred.

Use in cosmetics
The use concentration is 2-5%. All carrier variants are suitable for cosmetic formulations. Thanks to its good water solubility, the extract can be incorporated into water-based systems. Typical fields of application are facial care, formulations for soothing skin care and blemish-prone skin, as well as sensitive formulations. The flavonoids it contains add antioxidant properties to the formulation. Since the extract is free from essential oils, it contains no fragrance allergens subject to declaration.
Use in food
The variant with glycerin as the carrier is intended for food applications. The regulatory status is food/spice, and marketability is confirmed. Depending on the variant, glycerin or water, Propylene Glycol or Pentylene Glycol are relevant for the ingredient declaration.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between black cumin seed oil and Black Cumin Extract?
The extract is water-based and concentrates the hydrophilic compounds of Nigella sativa, including flavonoids, saponins and polysaccharides. It is readily soluble in water and free from essential oils. This makes it suitable for aqueous formulations in which an oil cannot be used.
Is Nigella Sativa Extract water-soluble?
Yes, its solubility in water is good. The extract is a clear liquid, occasionally slightly cloudy, with an amber to light brown color.
Which carrier variant is suitable for which application?
All variants are suitable for cosmetics: glycerin as well as water with Propylene Glycol or Pentylene Glycol. The glycerin variant is intended for food.
What is the shelf life of Black Cumin Extract?
When stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container, the shelf life is 24 months. The color may change during storage. Any cloudiness or precipitation can be filtered off; the quality remains unaffected.
Which documents are available?
