INCI: Nigella Sativa Extract, CAS 90064-32-7. Black Cumin Oil Extract is a lipophilic plant extract from Nigella sativa with thymoquinone as its lead marker. The raw material is intended for the cosmetics and food industries and is supplied as a clear, amber to light brown liquid. Unlike pressed black cumin seed oil, the extract concentrates the lipophilic constituents of the plant in a defined carrier oil.
Production
CONIUNCTA produces the extract in Germany using its proprietary AVE technology, Adaptive Vacuum Extraction. Three carrier variants are available: jojoba oil (Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil), squalane or sunflower oil (Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil). The extract content is approx. 30% in each variant. 1 kg of extract contains the lipophilic constituents of approx. 35 g of dried or approx. 220 g of fresh plant material. The raw material is sourced from Europe and other growing regions worldwide, with material from certified organic cultivation preferred.

Use in cosmetics
The use concentration is 2-5%. All three carrier variants are suitable for cosmetic formulations. Thanks to its good oil solubility, the extract can be incorporated directly into the oil phase. Typical applications include hair oils, beard care, facial oils and body oils as well as rich facial care. The raw material contributes skin-conditioning, moisturising and astringent properties to the formulation. The regulatory framework is the Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.
Use in food
The sunflower oil carrier variant is intended for food applications. The respective carrier oil is declared as an ingredient, i.e. sunflower oil for the food-grade variant. Dosing follows the use concentration of 2-5%.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between black cumin seed oil and black cumin oil extract?
For the oil extract, the lipophilic constituents of Nigella sativa are obtained by vacuum extraction and dissolved in a carrier oil. The extract content is approx. 30%. 1 kg of extract thus corresponds to the lipophilic constituents of approx. 220 g of fresh plant material.
Which carrier oil is the right one?
All three variants are suitable for cosmetics: jojoba oil, squalane and sunflower oil. For food applications, choose the sunflower oil variant. A separate technical data sheet is available for each variant.
Is Nigella Sativa Extract vegan?
Yes. The extract is declared vegan and is produced in Germany.
What is the shelf life of the extract?
24 months when stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container. The colour may change during storage. If cloudiness or sediment forms, simple filtration is sufficient. Quality remains unaffected.
Which documents are available?
A separate technical data sheet (TDS) is available for each carrier variant, along with a shared safety data sheet (SDS) and a certificate of analysis for each batch. Microbiological testing follows ISO 21149, ISO 16212, ISO 17516 and ISO 18415. Prices and volume tiers after login.
