Cinchona Bark Extract (Cinchona Succirubra Bark Extract): Quinine as Lead Marker for Skin-Stimulating Formulations

Chinarinde Extrakt (Cinchona Succirubra Bark Extract): Chinin als Leitmarker für hautstimulierende Formulierungen - CONIUNCTA

Cinchona Bark Extract (INCI: Cinchona Succirubra Bark Extract) is obtained from the bark of Cinchona succirubra and is available from CONIUNCTA® in three carrier variants: based on glycerin, propylene glycol, and pentylene glycol. As a conventional raw material, it is intended exclusively for the cosmetics industry and is not suitable for food applications. For formulators, the extract is of particular interest due to its characteristic alkaloid profile, which features quinine (Quinine) as a clearly defined lead marker.

Quinine as a Defined Lead Marker

The primary marker of the extract is quinine (Quinine). According to the data sheet, the content in the product is 0.7 to 2.5 mg/mL; at an application concentration of 2 %, this calculates to approximately 14.0 to 50.0 µg/mL in the finished formulation. In addition to quinine, further bark alkaloids have been detected: Quinidine at 0.5 to 2 % and Cinchonine at 1 to 3 % (each relative to the dry plant). This defined marker profile makes the extract attractive for formulations in which a verifiably characterised botanical active is required.

Documented Activity Profile

The following properties are documented for Cinchona Bark Extract in the CDS: astringent, anti-ageing, balancing, and elasticity support. For the marker quinine, a skin-stimulating effect with microcirculation enhancement is additionally substantiated. The molecular targets indicated are acetylcholinesterase and nicotinic receptors.

These properties can be positioned within cosmetic concepts centred on firming, balancing, and vitalising care. CONIUNCTA® formulates these claims in close alignment with the data sheet and exclusively within a cosmetic context.

Three Carrier Variants for Different Systems

The extract is available in three water-based carrier systems, facilitating selection according to the respective formulation architecture:

  • Glycerin variant (INCI: Glycerin, Cinchona Succirubra Bark Extract): anhydrous glycerin (≥ 99.5 %) serves as the standardisation medium and constitutes approximately 70 % of the finished product.
  • Propylene glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Propylene Glycol, Cinchona Succirubra Bark Extract): standardisation via a propylene glycol/water mixture.
  • Pentylene glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Pentylene Glycol, Cinchona Succirubra Bark Extract): standardisation via a pentylene glycol/water mixture.

In all variants, purified water serves as the extraction solvent and does not remain in the finished product. The extract content is approximately 30 % across all variants. The recommended application concentration is 2 to 5 %; for claim substantiation, the data sheet specifies a range of 1 to 3 %.

Physical Characteristics and Handling

The extract is a clear to amber to light brown liquid with a characteristic colour and a density of 1.03 to 1.06. According to the safety data sheet, the product is not a hazardous substance under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008; no hazard pictograms and no signal word are required. PBT/vPvB classifications and endocrine-active constituents are each below 0.1 %. The product is not a dangerous good.

Temperature-dependent colour changes may occur during storage; in the event of turbidity or precipitates, filtration is possible without impairing quality. The shelf life is 24 months when stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container.

Technical Documentation and Portfolio Classification

For each variant, CONIUNCTA® provides technical data sheets (TDS), safety data sheets (SDS) and Composition Data Sheets (CDS), as well as batch-specific certificates of analysis (CoA). An overview and access to these documents can be found on the technical documentation page. Cinchona Bark Extract is part of our classic plant extracts; further water-soluble options are listed under our glycerin-based extracts.
