German chamomile (Chamomilla Recutita, synonymous with Matricaria) is one of the most thoroughly documented flower drugs. For formulators in the cosmetics and food industries, CONIUNCTA® supplies Chamomile Flower Extract with the INCI designation Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract as a clear, pale yellow liquid. The product is obtained from the chamomile flower, is water-based extracted, and is available in three carrier variants (Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Pentylene Glycol). This article classifies the leading markers, carrier systems, fields of application, and the documented basis, without providing formulation directives. Apigenin-7-glucoside: the standardized leading marker The central documented marker of this extract is apigenin-7-glucoside, a flavone glycoside of the chamomile flower. The CONIUNCTA® data sheet indicates a content of 74 to 315 µg/mL in the product; the literature content in the dried plant is 0.3 to 1%. The reference framework consists of the specifications of the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur., min. 0.25% apigenin-7-glucoside) as well as the ESCOP monographs. This standardization makes the flavone a reproducible analytical reference point for batch evaluation. In addition to the leading flavone, further compounds are described in the phytochemical profile of the flower that are associated with chamomile in the scientific literature: (-)-α-bisabolol (0.1 to 0.5% of the flower, in the essential oil) as well as chamazulene, which is formed from matricin. Important for the technical classification: the present extract is aqueous-derived and therefore contains no fragrance allergens subject to declaration under Annex III of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009, as no essential oils are carried over. What is Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract? The search terms "chamomilla recutita flower extract", "matricaria flower extract" and "camomile flower extract EC" all refer to the same raw material: an extract from the flower of German chamomile (Chamomilla Recutita, botanically also Matricaria recutita). The "EC" suffix refers to the European INCI nomenclature. At CONIUNCTA®, this is a water-glycerin-based or water-diol-based extract with an extract content of approx. 30%. The drug-extract ratio (DER) of the native extract fraction is 1:10 (dried). The CAS number of the extract is 84082-60-0. One kilogram of the CONIUNCTA® extract contains the hydrophilic constituents of approximately 35 g of dried or about 220 g of fresh chamomile flower. The Natural Origin Index according to ISO 16128 is 1.0, and the product is suitable for vegan formulations. Three carrier variants for different systems The Chamomile Flower Extract is available with three standardization media, each based on an aqueous extraction: Glycerin variant (INCI: Glycerin, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract): standardization medium glycerin (≥ 99.5%, approx. 70% of the final product). According to product information, this variant is suitable for food applications and suitable for aqueous cosmetic systems. Propylene Glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Propylene Glycol, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract): composition approx. 40% water, 30% extract, 30% propylene glycol. Pentylene Glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Pentylene Glycol, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract): water-pentylene glycol mixture as standardization medium. All three variants are suitable for cosmetic applications. The choice depends on the system architecture of the target formulation and the preferred carrier substances; the extract fraction remains comparable at approx. 30% across the variants. Documented application profile in cosmetics Based on the phytochemical profile and published literature, the CONIUNCTA® data sheet lists the following application focuses for the Chamomile Flower Extract: soothing (in the cosmetic sense), balancing, anti-ageing, glow/radiance, and skin-plumping. The data sheet names the ERβ receptor, collagen synthesis, and MMP inhibition as cosmetic targets. These statements describe the documented orientation of the raw material; the evaluation and substantiation of finished cosmetic claims is the responsibility of the manufacturing company as part of the respective product safety assessment. The recommended use concentration on the product side is 2 to 5%; the at-a-glance table of the data sheet additionally names a use level of 1 to 3%. Typical application environments are aqueous and emulsified care formulations for facial and body care where a hydrophilic, allergen-free flower extract is required. Use in functional foods The glycerin variant is suitable for food applications. The data sheet names a use range of 0.5 to 2% for functional foods and beverages and classifies metabolic health and the reduction of oxidative stress as application goals. As a liquid, water-based extract, it can be incorporated into beverage and liquid-based concepts. Suitability for a specific final product as well as compliance with food law requirements remain the responsibility of the processing company. Safety, storage, and documentation According to the safety data sheet, the Chamomile Flower Extract is not a hazardous substance under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008: no pictogram, no signal word, no H or P statements required. It is not dangerous goods according to ADR/RID, IMDG, and IATA, and shows no endocrine-disrupting properties according to REACH Art. 57(f). The recommended storage temperature is 15 to 25 °C, with a shelf life of 24 months in the unopened original container under dry storage between 10 and 30 °C. A practical note: a color change may occur during storage depending on temperature. If turbidity or precipitation occurs, filtration is sufficient; the quality of the product remains unaffected.
