Frankincense Oil Extract (Boswellia Serrata Resin Extract): KBA and AKBA from the Resin for Firming and Soothing Concepts

CONIUNCTA®

The Frankincense Oil Extract from CONIUNCTA® (INCI: Boswellia Serrata Resin Extract) is obtained from the resin of Boswellia serrata and is available as an anhydrous, oil-based preparation in three carrier variants: sunflower oil, jojoba oil and squalane. The extract is of conventional quality and, according to the CDS, suitable for vegans. For formulators it is interesting for three reasons: the documented boswellic acids KBA and AKBA, the CDS-supported claim areas firming, soothing, pore-refining and skin-plumping, and the option of additionally using the sunflower oil variant in food supplements. Boswellic acids as lead markers: the figures from the CDS As primary markers, the CDS lists the boswellic acids KBA (11-keto-β-boswellic acid) and AKBA, which belong to the group of pentacyclic triterpenes. A calculated content of 0.2 to 1.1 mg/g is stated for the product. The CDS also converts this value to a formulation: at a use level of 3.5 %, this results in a calculated 7.4 to 37.8 µg/g in the final product. This figure is useful for product developers who want to document marker contents in the finished formulation or present them transparently to their customers. In addition, the CDS cites a literature content of 1 to 4 % for the herbal drug (Ammon 2006, Ph. Eur. draft), as well as further compounds: KBA at 1 to 3 %, AKBA at 0.5 to 2 % and total boswellic acids at 3 to 8 %. An essential oil content of 2.4 to 10 % is also documented for the dried drug. These percentages are not equivalent to the content in the oil extract: for the product itself, the CDS states the calculated value of 0.2 to 1.1 mg/g, since the extract is standardized in an oil carrier. Firming, soothing, pore-refining: which claim areas are documented In the cosmetics field, the CDS lists the effect „Firming“ under „At a Glance“. In addition, „Soothing / anti-irritant“, „Pore-refining“ and „Skin-plumping“ are listed as supported claim areas. This opens up application scenarios for care concepts with firming, soothing, pore-refining or plumping aims, for example in consumer communication around a plumper-looking complexion. The final claim wording and its substantiation on the finished product are the responsibility of the party placing the product on the market. The CDS also lists NF-κB, collagen synthesis and the glucocorticoid receptor as targets. This information expressly describes the mechanistic background and is not a product claim. For claims on the finished product, only the claim areas mentioned above are documented. Three oil carriers, one extract content: sunflower oil, jojoba oil and squalane compared All three variants share the same composition: approx. 70 % carrier and approx. 30 % extract. According to the TDS, the respective carrier serves as the extraction and standardization medium. According to the product specification, 1 kg of CONIUNCTA® extract contains the lipophilic constituents of approx. 30 g of dried plant parts. The documented use concentration in cosmetics is 2 to 5 % for all variants. In color, the extract ranges from amber to light brown. Sunflower oil: EU INCI Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Boswellia Serrata Resin Extract (Global: Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Boswellia Serrata Resin Extract). The only variant suitable for food supplements; packaging according to TDS in plastic container or drum. Jojoba oil: EU INCI Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil, Boswellia Serrata Resin Extract (Global: Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Boswellia Serrata Resin Extract). According to the TDS for cosmetics, not for food. Squalane: INCI Squalane, Boswellia Serrata Resin Extract (Global and EU identical). Variant for cosmetics. The choice of carrier is therefore mainly a question of the INCI list, the target market and the desired oil phase profile. Anyone who already builds a care line on jojoba oil or squalane can source the frankincense extract in the same carrier and thus avoid an additional oil entry in the INCI. The sunflower oil variant is a good choice when the same raw material is to be qualified for both cosmetics and food supplements. Further oil-based extracts can be found in our collection sunflower oil extracts. Food supplements: Novel Food status of the sunflower oil variant In addition to cosmetics (suitable according to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009), the Frankincense Oil Extract in the sunflower oil variant is also intended for food supplements. According to the CDS, it is listed in the Novel Food Catalogue as not novel for food supplements (POL-NF-00194). According to the dossier, use in the food sector is restricted to food supplements. As an effect in the food sector, the CDS states „Traditional dietary ingredient“. The dossier does not contain a percentage for food: the use level in food supplements is agreed upon request. According to the SDS, allergen labeling under the Food Information Regulation (FIC) is the responsibility of the food business operator. Our technical team will address specific questions about use levels individually. Alpha-pinene and linalool: fragrance allergens in INCI planning The Frankincense Oil Extract contains fragrance allergens according to Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. For alpha-pinene, the CDS states 336 mg/kg in the raw material, which the SDS classifies as < 0.1 %. At a use level of 5 %, this results in a calculated 16.8 mg/kg in the finished product. According to the CDS, alpha-pinene becomes subject to labeling from approx. 3 % use in leave-on products or from approx. 30 % in rinse-off products. Within the documented use concentration of 2 to 5 %, the declaration threshold can therefore be reached in leave-on products, which must be taken into account when planning the INCI list. Linalool is also declared; this information was carried over from the previous revision (TDS Rev. 13.0), and no content has been calculated. The SDS points out that allergic reactions are possible in sensitized individuals and that the manufacturer of the finished product should check labeling according to EUH208. The safety assessment of the finished product is carried out by the responsible person in accordance with the Cosmetics Regulation. Safety data, storage and documentation According to the SDS, the product is not a hazardous substance within the meaning of the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, and no labeling is required. It is not a PBT/vPvB substance and contains no endocrine disruptors (≥ 0.1 %). It is a combustible liquid (storage class 10 according to TRGS 510) with a flash point > 218 °C; this value is derived from the squalane carrier and has not been determined for the mixture. All carrier variants are classified as WGK 1 (slightly hazardous to water, self-classification according to AwSV). It is not dangerous goods according to ADR/RID, IMDG or IATA, and REACH registration is not required. The shelf life is 24 months when stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container; the SDS states a storage temperature of 15 to 25 °C. During storage, the color may change depending on temperature. Should turbidity or precipitation occur, filtration is required; this has no influence on the quality of the product. TDS, SDS and CDS for all three variants are available via our technical documentation; batch-related values such as relative density can be found in the respective CoA. An overview of further botanical raw materials is available in our range of classic plant extracts.
