Marshmallow Extract (Althaea Officinalis Root Extract): Mucilage Polysaccharides from the Root for Film-Forming Formulations
Marshmallow Extract (INCI: Althaea Officinalis Root Extract) is obtained from the root of the common marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) and is available from CONIUNCTA® in several carrier variants: in glycerin, in a propylene glycol/water system, and in a pentylene glycol/water system. It is a conventional raw material in liquid form, designed for applications in the cosmetic and food industries. At the heart of the extract are the mucilage-forming polysaccharides of the root, which provide film-forming and moisturising properties. The Root as a Source of Mucilage Polysaccharides Characteristic of marshmallow is the high proportion of mucilaginous substances in the root. In CONIUNCTA®'s Marshmallow Extract, the mucilage polysaccharides are indicatively 1.4 to 4 mg/mL in the product according to the CDS; the literature content in the dried drug is stated as 5 to 12 % (Ph. Eur., Wichtl 2009). These polysaccharides are the key marker of the extract and are responsible for the film-forming and moisturising effects. As a further confirmed compound, the CDS lists scopoletin in a range of 0.02 to 0.05 %. The composition of the extract remains comparable across all carrier variants: the extract content is approximately 30 % of the finished product. Documented Efficacy Profile for Cosmetic Applications For cosmetic use, the CDS lists the claim categories in accordance with EC 655/2013: astringent, anti-ageing, balancing, and skin-plumping. The mucilage polysaccharides are specifically attributed with moisturising, film-forming, and wound-healing-supporting properties. As targets, the CDS identifies mannose receptors and fibroblast proliferation for the cosmetic sector. The product claims highlighted as central are "balancing" and "skin-plumping", making the extract interesting for formulations focused on comfort and a smooth, plumped skin appearance. Carrier Variants and Their Areas of Application CONIUNCTA® offers the Marshmallow Extract in three carrier systems suitable for different formulation contexts: Glycerin variant (INCI: Glycerin, Althaea Officinalis Root Extract): carrier system based on glycerin (greater than or equal to 99.5 %, anhydrous), approx. 70 % of the finished product; extraction solvent is purified water. According to product data, this variant is suitable for use in food. Propylene glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Propylene Glycol, Althaea Officinalis Root Extract): standardised in a propylene glycol/water blend, composition approximately 40 % water, 30 % extract, 30 % propylene glycol. Pentylene glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Pentylene Glycol, Althaea Officinalis Root Extract): standardised in a pentylene glycol/water blend. All variants are suitable for cosmetic applications. The recommended use concentration is 2 to 5 %; at a use level of 3 %, the extract delivers 42.0 to 120 µg/mL in the formulation according to the CDS. A helpful overview of water-soluble systems is provided by our glycerin extracts as well as the full range of classic plant extracts. Use in Food For functional food and beverages, the CDS specifies a use concentration of 0.5 to 2 %; at a use level of 1.3 %, this results in 17.5 to 50.0 µg/mL in the formulation. In the food sector, the CDS describes the extract as a nutritive antioxidant and traditional food ingredient with reference to metabolic health and the reduction of oxidative stress. According to product data, the glycerin variant is suitable for food applications. Specification, Safety and Documentation Marshmallow Extract presents as a clear liquid with a characteristic colour (amber to light brown); density is 1.03 to 1.06. When stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container, the shelf life is 24 months. Temperature and storage conditions may lead to colour changes, turbidity, or precipitation; filtration is possible in such cases and has no effect on quality. According to the SDS, the product is not a hazardous substance under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, has no PBT/vPvB properties and no endocrine-disrupting properties (greater than or equal to 0.1 %), and is not a dangerous good for transport. The complete technical documents (TDS, SDS, CDS) are made available to registered customers via our technical documentation.
