Andrographis Powder Extract 10:1 (Andrographis Paniculata): Andrographolides as Lead Marker in the Powder

CONIUNCTA®

The Andrographis Powder Extract 10:1 (INCI: Andrographis Paniculata) is a powdered plant extract derived from the whole plant of Andrographis paniculata. It is obtained by extraction with ethanol and water, then processed into a stable powder on a maltodextrin carrier (1 to 20%). With an extraction ratio of 10:1 and andrographolides as the primary marker, this raw material is aimed at formulators in the cosmetics and food industries. This article summarises the documented key data for formulation development. Andrographolides: the documented primary marker A defining characteristic of this extract is its andrographolide content, a diterpene lactone. The CDS specifies an indicative concentration of 70 to 315 mg/g in the product. Neoandrographolide is listed as an additional confirmed compound at 0.3 to 0.8%. These markers form the analytical basis for identification and quality control of the raw material. The marker specifications serve as a reference for formulators when specifying incoming batches. Actual batch values can be found in the respective certificate of analysis (CoA). Documented activity profile for cosmetic applications The CDS lists the following effects for cosmetic use: anti-inflammatory (based on the phytochemical profile and published literature), as well as anti-irritant and soothing. The cosmetic targets listed are NF-kB and IKK-beta. These statements describe the profile established in the data sheet and are to be assessed within the cosmetic regulatory framework applicable to the respective finished product. Verification and advertising claims in the finished product are always subject to the regulatory assessment by the party placing the product on the market. Use in functional food and beverages For the food sector, the CDS describes the extract as a nutritional antioxidant and traditional dietary ingredient. The listed application areas are metabolic health and the reduction of oxidative stress. According to the CDS, the recommended use concentration in the food sector is 0.5 to 2% in functional food and beverages. As a powder, the extract can be incorporated into dry and liquid systems. Powder form, use concentration and specifications The raw material is presented as a brown powder; the product colour is described as golden yellow to light brown. Odour and taste are characteristic. The particle size corresponds to 80 mesh (minimum 95% pass, untamped); the bulk density is between 0.50 and 0.70. The composition consists of 80 to 99% Andrographis extract and 1 to 20% maltodextrin as a carrier. Use concentration cosmetics: 1 to 3% (CDS), general recommendation for total extract 2 to 5% Use concentration food: 0.5 to 2% in functional food and beverages Shelf life: 24 months when stored dry in the original sealed container Storage: cool, dry, well ventilated, airtight, away from heat and moisture Colour changes may occur during storage depending on temperature. From a safety perspective, the raw material is not classified as a hazardous substance (in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008) and is not a UN dangerous good.
