Burdock Root Extract (Arctium Lappa Root Extract): Mucilages and Lignans from the Root

CONIUNCTA®

Burdock Root Extract (INCI: Arctium Lappa Root Extract) derives its characteristic constituents from the root of the greater burdock (Arctium lappa). CONIUNCTA® offers this liquid extract in three carrier variants: Glycerin, Pentylene Glycol, and Propylene Glycol. For formulators in cosmetics and dietary supplements, it is a versatile water-based raw material with a documented moisturizing and balancing profile that fits into a broad range of aqueous formulations. The Root as a Raw Material Base The botanical origin of the extract is exclusively the root of Arctium lappa, of vegetable origin. The CAS number of the extract is 84012-13-5, and the drug-to-extract ratio of the native extract is 1:10. In all carrier variants, the extract content is approximately 30 percent: 1 kg of CONIUNCTA® extract contains the hydrophilic constituents of about 30 g of dried plant material. Purified water serves as the extraction solvent, with standardization subsequently carried out in the respective carrier medium. Mucilages and Lignans: The Characteristic Compound Classes The data sheet (CDS) identifies two characteristic compound classes for burdock root. Mucilages are documented with a soothing and moisturizing function, lignans with an antioxidant function. Quantified individual compounds or fixed concentrations of specific markers are not stated in the dossier; the information is qualitative in nature. For batch-related assessment, batch-specific analytics (HPLC/DAD, GC/MS, LC-MS) are available upon request. Documented Efficacy Profile for Cosmetic Formulations The CDS lists the cosmetic claims Anti-ageing, Balancing, Elasticity support, and Moisture-promoting for Burdock Root Extract. These properties make the extract interesting for nourishing, balancing, and moisture-focused concepts. Important for product development: every claim made on the finished product requires independent substantiation by the manufacturer of the finished product in accordance with Regulation (EU) No. 655/2013. The extract provides the raw material basis; responsibility for the claim lies with the responsible person for the finished product. Comparison of Three Carrier Variants The choice of carrier determines integration into the formulation and regulatory suitability: Glycerin: INCI Glycerin, Arctium Lappa Root Extract. Glycerin serves as the standardization medium (approximately 70 percent of the finished product), with purified water as the extraction solvent. This is the only food-grade variant. Propylene Glycol: INCI Aqua (Water), Propylene Glycol, Arctium Lappa Root Extract. Propylene glycol/water mixture as standardization medium; not food-grade, used in cosmetics. Pentylene Glycol: INCI Aqua (Water), Pentylene Glycol, Arctium Lappa Root Extract. Pentylene glycol/water mixture as standardization medium; designed for cosmetic applications. All variants are liquid, with a characteristic color (amber to light brown) and characteristic odor; exact values for pH, relative density, and refractive index can be found in the respective CoA. For further information on production, please visit our page on AVE technology. All carrier variants of the extract are suitable for vegan formulations. Usage Concentration, Food Applications, and Novel Food Status For cosmetic applications under Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009, a usage concentration of 2 to 5 percent is documented. Our technical team is available to clarify specific formulation and dosage questions beyond this range. For food applications, only the Glycerin variant is suitable, and only for dietary supplements. Here, the Novel Food status is listed as not novel (entry POL-NF-00145); a percentage figure for the usage level is not documented and is available upon request. Allergen labeling in accordance with Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 is the responsibility of the food business operator. Safety, Storage, and Regulatory Framework According to the safety data sheet, the product is not a hazardous substance and is not classified as hazardous under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP); no hazard pictogram, signal word, or H-/P-statements are required. The water hazard class (AwSV) is listed as WGK 1 (slightly hazardous to water) for all carrier variants. There is no PBT/vPvB potential or endocrine-disrupting properties according to the relevant REACH criteria. Shelf life is 24 months under dry storage between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container. Color changes, cloudiness, or precipitation may occur during storage without affecting quality; filtration may be required in the case of precipitation. Technical Documentation and Sourcing For all carrier variants of Burdock Root Extract, we provide complete technical documentation (TDS, SDS, CDS) as well as batch-specific certificates of analysis. The extract is part of our range of classic plant extracts; the food-grade Glycerin variant can also be found among our glycerin extracts.
