BIOLISSE® Squalane (Squalane): Pure Olive-Derived Hydrocarbon for Barrier-Strengthening Formulations

BIOLISSE® Squalane (INCI: Squalane) is a defined pure substance for the cosmetics industry: a colourless, transparent, oily and odourless liquid consisting of 100% Squalane. Unlike a classical botanical extract, this product contains no carrier system and no solvent; it is present undiluted as a pure hydrocarbon. For formulators, this represents a well-plannable, sensorially neutral lipophilic building block. Squalane (C30H62): A Defined Pure Substance Rather Than an Extract Mixture The primary marker and sole constituent is Squalane (C30H62), with a purity of 100% as documented in the CDS. According to the data sheet, no further compounds are present: this is a defined pure substance, not a botanical extract mixture. This single-substance nature provides formulators with a reproducible, clearly characterised component free of any variable accompanying matrix. As a hydrocarbon, Squalane has no applicable pH value. The density is 0.81 g/mL at 25 °C (specification range 0.804 to 0.835). Squalane is insoluble in water and miscible with organic solvents, mineral oil and vegetable oils. Origin from the Olive (Olea europaea) According to the TDS, the botanical origin is the olive (Olea europaea). BIOLISSE® Squalane is obtained by hydrogenation of squalene derived from olive oil. The product is documented as suitable for vegan formulations. Please note: BIOLISSE® Squalane is a conventional product and does not carry organic certification. Documented Activity Profile The CDS lists the following effects for Squalane verbatim: balancing, moisture-promoting, moisturising, barrier-strengthening, conditioning, skin-plumping and pro-age. In cosmetic terms, this translates to a moisture-promoting, skin-conditioning and barrier-strengthening profile. BIOLISSE® Squalane is suitable for cosmetic use in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009; it is not suitable for food use and is intended exclusively for cosmetic application. Use Concentration and Sensory Behaviour The CDS documents a use concentration of 1 to 10%; the TDS indicates a technical range of 1.0 to 100%. Since Squalane is odourless and sensorially unobtrusive, it is well suited as a lipophilic component without masking the inherent character of a formulation. Storage, Safety and Regulatory Status According to the SDS, BIOLISSE® Squalane is not a hazardous substance and is not classified as dangerous goods; it carries no hazard pictogram and no signal word. The substance is classified as a flammable liquid (flash point 218 °C, storage class TRGS 510: 10) and is compliant with REACH Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006. Storage at 15 to 25 °C is recommended, tightly closed, protected from light and moisture, and kept away from strong oxidising agents and direct sunlight. The shelf life in the unopened original container is 36 months according to the TDS. Note from the disclaimer: colour changes, turbidity or precipitates may occur due to temperature or storage conditions; in such cases, filtration is sufficient and product quality remains unaffected.
