Green Tea Extract (Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract): EGCG and Polyphenols for Antioxidant Formulations

With CONIUNCTA® PRO CPG-17 Green Tea Extract (INCI: Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract), formulators in cosmetic and food companies have access to a leaf extract of the tea plant with an indicatively stated EGCG content. The extract is available as a clear, light-green liquid in three carrier variants (Pentylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, and Glycerin), making it compatible with a variety of formulation systems. This article summarises the markers, effects, and technical parameters documented in the dossier for product development. EGCG as the Documented Lead Marker The characteristic marker of the extract is EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). According to the datasheet, the EGCG content is indicatively 0.7 to 3.2 mg/mL in the product, which at a use level of 2% corresponds to a contribution of 14.0 to 64.0 µg/mL in the formulation. In addition, the CDS documents a caffeine content of 2 to 5% and total polyphenols of 15 to 30% (each referenced to the dry herb). These values form the analytical basis for reproducible processing. Antioxidant Profile and Cosmetic Effects For cosmetic applications, the CDS documents an antioxidant activity profile: antioxidant protection against UV and environmental stress, astringent and balancing properties, elasticity support, and a pore-refining effect. The identified targets are ROS, the Nrf2/ARE signalling pathway, and MMPs. This makes the extract suitable for formulators looking to integrate an antioxidant functional principle into skincare and skin-balance concepts. Application in Food and Food Supplements In the food sector, antioxidant properties as well as support for lipid metabolism and cardiovascular function are documented for the extract. The CDS identifies the targets as ROS scavenging, inhibition of LDL oxidation, and endothelial function. As a regulatory reference point, the dossier cites an EFSA reference of 300 to 800 mg of polyphenols per day from tea. Typical application areas are functional beverages and food supplements; the use concentration stated in the CDS is 1 to 3% in this context. The Glycerin variant is intended for food applications. Three Carrier Variants for Different Systems The extract is available in three water-based carrier systems. The Glycerin variant (INCI: Glycerin, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract) uses glycerin as the carrier medium and is suitable for both cosmetic and food applications. The Propylene Glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Propylene Glycol, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract) and the Pentylene Glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Pentylene Glycol, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract) are available for cosmetic applications. Purified water is used as the extraction solvent and does not remain in the final product. All variants are suitable for cosmetic applications. Technical Parameters and Documentation The extract is a liquid product with a density of 1.03 to 1.06. The use concentration stated in the TDS is 2 to 5%; the CDS specifies 1 to 3% for both cosmetic and food applications. The shelf life is 24 months when stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container. According to the SDS, the product is not a hazardous substance under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 and is not a dangerous good within the meaning of ADR/RID, IMDG, and IATA. Storage-related colour changes, turbidity, or precipitates are possible; filtration is sufficient in such cases and has no effect on quality.
