Turmeric Oil Extract (Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract): Curcumin and ar-Turmerone from the Root in Three Oil Carriers

CONIUNCTA®

The Turmeric Oil Extract (INCI: Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract) from CONIUNCTA® captures the lipophilic constituents of the turmeric root in an anhydrous, oil-based preparation. For formulators, this means a fat-soluble carrier for the characteristic curcuminoids and the essential oil of the root, tailored to oil-based and emulsified systems. The extract is available in three oil carriers (sunflower oil, jojoba oil and squalane) and is aimed at developers in the cosmetics industry and, in the sunflower oil variant, in the food industry. Why an Oil-Soluble Turmeric Extract? Curcumin and the accompanying curcuminoids are lipophilic compounds. An oily carrier system allows these constituents to be incorporated into formulations without adding water. The preparation is anhydrous in structure: it consists of approx. 70% carrier oil and approx. 30% extract fraction, regardless of the chosen variant. The native extract is characterized by a drug-extract ratio (DER) of 1:10; 1 kg of extract contains the lipophilic constituents of approx. 30 g of dried plant material. This structure makes the extract accessible for oil and serum phases, anhydrous balms, and the oil phase of emulsions, without requiring an additional solubilizer for aqueous systems. Markers and Documented Compounds from the Root The botanical origin is the root (rhizome) of Curcuma longa. According to the CDS, the calculated curcumin content is 0.4 to 1.6 mg/g (product-related); the dried starting plant carries 2 to 6% curcumin according to the literature (Ph. Eur.: at least 3.0% dicinnamoylmethane derivatives, calculated as curcumin; Li et al. 2011: 2 to 9%). Curcumin as the primary marker, documented in the CDS with the functions "soothing, antioxidant". Demethoxycurcumin and Bisdemethoxycurcumin (together 1 to 3%) as further curcuminoids. ar-Turmerone as a lipophilic constituent of the essential oil (3 to 7%). Essential oils as a characteristic constituent, described in the CDS with the functions "aromatic, antimicrobial". Documented Activity Profile and Supported Claim Areas The CDS lists the functions "soothing" and "antioxidant" for curcumin, as well as "aromatic" and "antimicrobial" for the essential oils. As supported cosmetic claim areas, the data sheet names: Antioxidant protection, Soothing / anti-irritant, Glow / radiance, and Conditioning. The intense inherent color of the curcuminoids particularly shapes glow and radiance concepts, where the color itself is used as a design feature. Important for practice: These claim areas are mechanistic and orientational in nature. Under Regulation (EC) No 655/2013, every product claim requires independent substantiation by the manufacturer of the finished product. CONIUNCTA® provides the material basis with the CDS, not the finished marketing claim. Comparing the Three Carrier Variants All three variants are anhydrous, oil-based preparations with approx. 30% extract content. The choice of carrier determines the sensory and formulatory behavior: Sunflower oil (INCI EU: Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract): the extraction and standardization medium; the only variant suitable for food use. Jojoba oil (INCI EU: Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract): a wax ester with a characteristic skin feel for nourishing cosmetic concepts. Squalane (INCI: Squalane, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract): a light, well-spreading hydrocarbon for drier, fast-absorbing textures. All variants are suitable for vegan formulations. For the lipophilic sunflower oil extracts and other oil-soluble raw materials, it is worth taking a look at the corresponding collection. Usage Concentration, Food Suitability and Reference Values For cosmetic applications, the data sheet specifies a usage concentration of 1 to 5%. At an exemplary use level of 3% (average value), this calculates to 12.6 to 48.6 µg/g curcumin in the formulation. In food applications (sunflower oil variant only), the range is 0.5 to 2%; at 1.25% use, this calculates to 5.3 to 20.3 µg/g curcumin. As a reference, the CDS points to the EFSA ADI for curcumin (E 100) of 3 mg/kg body weight per day. Cosmetic suitability is given in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009; food suitability applies exclusively to the sunflower oil carrier variant. Specific formulation and dosage questions are addressed individually by our technical team based on your target product. Handling, Storage and a Note on Color The product is not classified as a hazardous substance under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP); no pictogram, signal word or H/P statements are indicated. The SDS assigns the preparation to storage class 10 (flammable liquids) and recommends a storage temperature of 15 to 25 °C in a tightly closed container. Shelf life is 24 months when stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the originally sealed container. Due to the curcuminoids, temperature-dependent color changes may occur during storage; any resulting cloudiness or precipitation can be resolved by filtration and does not affect quality. This inherent color should be planned for from the outset in light-colored formulations. Documentation and Sourcing for Industrial Processing For every product, CONIUNCTA® provides complete technical documentation (TDS, SDS, CDS), including a batch-specific certificate of analysis (CoA) with relative density and refractive index. Background on our gentle extraction process can be found on the AVE technology page. The full range of raw materials can be accessed via the product list.
