Wild Yam Root Extract (Dioscorea Villosa (Wild Yam) Root Extract): Dioscin and Saponins from the Root

CONIUNCTA®

Wild Yam (Dioscorea villosa) provides, via its root, a characteristic starting material for cosmetic and, in the appropriate carrier variant, food-technology formulation. The CONIUNCTA® Wild Yam Root Extract (INCI: Dioscorea Villosa (Wild Yam) Root Extract) is obtained from the root material and is available in three water-based carrier systems: Glycerin, Propylene Glycol and Pentylene Glycol. For formulators, it combines a well-documented marker profile with flexible processability in aqueous systems. This article classifies marker content, carrier variants, substantiated claim areas and regulatory frameworks for development work. Dioscorea villosa: the root as a raw material source Botanically, the extract originates from Dioscorea villosa, the Wild Yam. As the plant part, only the root is processed. For the native extract, a drug-extract ratio (DER) of 1:10 is documented; the CAS number of the extract is 90147-49-2. In the finished product, the extract content is approximately 30 % regardless of the carrier variant: 1 kg of CONIUNCTA® extract contains the hydrophilic constituents of approximately 30 g of dried plant material. Extraction is carried out with purified water, with standardization in the respective carrier medium depending on the variant. Dioscin, saponins and allantoin: the marker profile The key marker of the extract is dioscin, a saponin glycoside from the class of steroid saponins. For the dried plant, a literature content of 1 to 4 % is documented (Yang 2014, Chin J Nat Med, peer-reviewed), resulting in a calculated content in the product of 0.2 to 1.1 mg/g. As further detected compounds, the CDS lists saponins (function: surfactant, soothing), allantoin (function: soothing, regenerative) as well as mucilages (function: soothing, moisturising). As mechanistic background (not a product claim), cell membrane interaction and NF-κB are noted in the dossier as targets. Dioscin - steroid saponin, key marker Saponins - surfactant, soothing Allantoin - soothing, regenerative Mucilages - soothing, moisturising Wild yam root effects: which claim areas are substantiated The claim areas supported by the CDS are astringent, balancing, elasticity support and conditioning. These statements are to be understood as cosmetics-compliant and refer to the product documentation, not to medicinal effects. Important for practice: advertising claims require independent substantiation by the manufacturer of the finished product in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 655/2013. The question of
