Bamboo Powder Extract 10:1 (Bambusa Vulgaris Leaf Extract): Flavone C-Glycosides and Silica from the Leaf
The Bamboo Powder Extract 10:1 from CONIUNCTA® is obtained from the leaf of Bambusa vulgaris and carries the INCI name Bambusa Vulgaris Leaf Extract. It is a fine, free-flowing powder without carrier: a 100% dry extract (manufacturer's specification) with an extract ratio (DER) of 10:1. For formulators, this product combines two characteristic aspects of the bamboo leaf in a dry, easily dosable form: flavone C-glycosides as a phenolic marker group and a mineral silica content. The powder is available as a raw material for both cosmetic applications and food supplements (conventional and organic according to IFOAM). The Bamboo Leaf as a Raw Material Source The starting material is exclusively the leaf of Bambusa vulgaris. Extraction is carried out with a water-ethanol mixture in a ratio of 50:50 (manufacturer's specification); residual solvents are removed by drying, in compliance with Directive 2009/32/EC. The result is a dry extract with the CAS number 91771-33-4. The color ranges from light beige to pale greenish-beige, the odor is characteristic. Since no excipient is contained, the active content is present undiluted in the powder, which facilitates handling in dry systems and in capsule formulations. Flavone C-Glycosides: The Phenolic Lead Marker As a primary marker, the data sheet documents the group of Total Flavone C-Glycosides, specifically Isoorientin, Orientin, Vitexin and Isovitexin. According to Nirmala et al. 2018, the literature content in the dried plant is 0.05 to 0.3%. For the product, this results in a calculated content of 1 to 13.5 mg/g. This figure is a semi-quantitative estimate based on limited data: it is based on the literature content of the drug multiplied by the DER 10:1, conservatively limited by an assumed extract yield of 20 to 35% (effectively 2.9 to 5.0:1) and a recovery of 70 to 90%. Formulators should understand these values as guidance and verify the actual content via the batch-specific certificate of analysis. Silica as a Mineral Component In addition to the flavone C-glycosides, the data sheet documents a mineral silica content of 1 to 4%. This content is mentioned in the data sheet as an application note for hair and nail applications (not a claim). The combination of a phenolic marker group and a mineral component distinguishes the bamboo leaf extract from purely flavonoid-based leaf extracts and makes it interesting for formulators who want to capture both aspects in a single raw material. Documented Effects and Regulatory Framework The data sheet describes the effects "Antioxidant, capillary strengthening" for cosmetic use. As mechanistic background (not a product claim), ROS scavenging, MMP inhibition and NF-κB are mentioned. Important for the declaration on the finished product: the data sheet explicitly states that no cosmetic claim areas are derived for this raw material ("No cosmetic claim areas are derived for this raw material"). Responsibility for the safety assessment and advertising claims of the finished product lies with the responsible person in accordance with Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009. For food applications, the extract is listed as not novel for food supplements (entry POL-NF-00175); use in the food sector is limited to food supplements. The extract is suitable for vegan formulations. Use Concentration, Carrier Logic and Application Fields For cosmetic applications, the manufacturer states a use concentration of 0.5 to 2%. For food supplements, a manufacturer's specification of 200 mg once daily is documented (food supplements only, no percentage stated). As a powder without carrier, this raw material differs fundamentally from our liquid glycerin- or sunflower oil-based extracts: it can be incorporated directly into dry systems, capsules and powder blends and is dispersible in water, with solubility depending on the extract. Those who need a liquid carrier system instead of a powder will find alternative formats in our glycerin extracts and sunflower oil extracts. Specific formulation and dosage questions beyond the data sheet information are individually clarified by our technical team. Quality, Documentation and Sourcing The Bamboo Powder Extract is available in conventional and organic quality (IFOAM). CONIUNCTA® is EU organic certified according to Regulation (EU) 2018/848 (DE-ÖKO-001, Kiwa BCS); details on our certifications can be found on the corresponding page. In terms of safety, the powder is not a hazardous substance according to CLP; dust formation should be avoided during processing (storage class 11, combustible solids). Shelf life is 24 months when stored dry, protected from light, between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed packaging. All associated data sheets are provided via our technical documentation. Further plant-based raw materials for antioxidant concepts can be found in our classic plant extracts.
