Saw Palmetto Oil Extract (Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract): Phytosterols from the Fruit in Three Oil Carriers
Saw Palmetto Oil Extract (INCI: Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract) is a purely oil-based, anhydrous preparation from the fruit of the saw palmetto. CONIUNCTA® offers this lipophilic extract in three carrier variants: sunflower oil, jojoba oil, and squalane. For formulators who wish to incorporate a fruit-based, phytosterol-containing lipid component into anhydrous or emulsified systems, this extract is an obvious choice. This product is intended exclusively for use in cosmetics and is not suitable for food applications. The Saw Palmetto Fruit as a Lipophilic Raw Material Source The extract is obtained from the fruit of Serenoa serrulata. A characteristic feature of this plant part is a lipophilic fraction that can be particularly well represented in oil-based systems. CONIUNCTA® uses the respective carrier oil both as extraction medium and as standardization medium. This results in a homogeneous preparation without added water, in which the lipophilic fruit constituents are present directly in the carrier. Regardless of the variant, the extract content is approximately 30 percent, while about 70 percent is accounted for by the respective carrier oil. Specifically, 1 kg of CONIUNCTA® extract contains the lipophilic constituents of approximately 30 g of dried plant parts. This defined composition facilitates reproducible processing across batches. Documented Compounds: Lauric Acid, Phytosterols, and Fatty Acids Lauric acid is documented as the primary marker. The calculated content in the product is 0.4 to 1.4 mg/g; the literature content of the dried plant is stated as 2 to 5 percent. At a use concentration of 3 percent, a lauric acid content of approximately 12.6 to 40.5 µg/g is calculated for the finished formulation. This information helps to classify the marker within the context of the overall formulation. As further documented compounds, the data sheet names phytosterols as a characteristic ingredient, beta-sitosterol, as well as oleic acid. Myristic acid is mentioned in the running text as part of the lipophilic fraction. This profile makes the extract a fruit-based lipid component with a defined sterol and fatty acid content. Conditioning and Barrier-Supporting: The Documented Application Profile The claim area listed in the CDS is "Conditioning". For the phytosterols, the function "barrier-supporting" is documented. As mechanistic background, expressly not a standalone product claim, "general skin health" is mentioned. This classification makes the extract interesting for nourishing, skin-friendly formulations in which a lipophilic care component with sterol content is desired. As with all cosmetic efficacy statements, the following applies: claims require independent substantiation by the manufacturer of the finished product in accordance with Regulation (EU) No. 655/2013. CONIUNCTA® provides the data basis with its technical documents; the final advertising claim is the responsibility of the responsible person of the finished product. Three Oil Carriers Compared: Sunflower Oil, Jojoba Oil, and Squalane All three variants are anhydrous, oil-based preparations without added water, with an extract content of approximately 30 percent. The choice of carrier determines the sensory and compositional profile of the formulation: Sunflower Oil (Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil): a classic, broadly well-tolerated vegetable oil carrier for oil-based and emulsified systems. Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil): a liquid wax with characteristic oxidation stability and a skin-friendly sensory profile. Squalane: a lightweight hydrocarbon with low color and odor, featuring a pleasantly dry finish. All variants are suitable for vegan formulations. According to the data sheet, the use concentration is 1 to 5 percent. Our technical team will be happy to clarify specific formulation and dosage questions individually. Production, Quality, and Regulatory Classification The extract is produced using CONIUNCTA®'s gentle AVE Technology (Adaptive Vacuum Extraction), Made in Germany. According to the safety data sheet, this is not a hazardous substance within the meaning of the CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008; neither a hazard pictogram nor a signal word is required. The product is classified as a cosmetic raw material in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009; the safety assessment of the finished product is the responsibility of the responsible person. Regarding storage: with dry storage between 10 and 30 °C in the originally sealed container, the shelf life is 24 months. Color changes during storage cannot be ruled out depending on temperature; any cloudiness or precipitation can be remedied by filtration and does not affect quality. No statement can be derived regarding fragrance allergens per Annex III, as the essential oil content of the source plant is not documented. Technical Documentation and Ordering TDS, SDS, and CDS, as well as the batch-specific certificate of analysis, are available for each batch.
