Grape Leaf Extract (Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Leaf Extract): OPC for Astringent and Skin-Tightening Formulations

CONIUNCTA®

Grape Leaf Extract (INCI: Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Leaf Extract) is obtained from the leaf of the grapevine and delivers oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC) as a key marker that is equally relevant for formulators in cosmetics and functional foods. CONIUNCTA® offers the extract in three carrier variants: Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, and Pentylene Glycol. This allows the profile to be flexibly adapted to different systems. It is a conventional raw material in liquid form with a characteristic color ranging from amber to light brown. OPC as the Key Marker of Grape Leaf The characteristic marker of this extract is OPC (oligomeric proanthocyanidins), which belong to the class of condensed tannins. According to the CDS, the OPC content in the product is indicatively 0.7 to 2.5 mg/mL; in dried plant material, the literature reports 3 to 8% (Shi et al. 2003). At a use level of 2%, the calculated OPC content in the formulation is 14.0 to 50.0 µg/mL. In addition to OPC, further compounds have been identified in the extract: Resveratrol (0.01 to 0.1%) as well as anthocyanins (in the skin, 0.5 to 2%). These compound groups define the antioxidant profile of the raw material. Documented Efficacy Profile for Skin Care The CDS lists the following properties for Grape Leaf Extract: astringent, antioxidant protection, balancing, circulation-promoting, moisturizing, conditioning, and skin-tightening (skin-plumping). Mechanistically, protein precipitation and MMP-1 inhibition are described. For cosmetic application, the data sheet lists protein precipitation, MMP-1 inhibition, and pore refinement as targets. This makes the extract a functional building block in formulations aiming for an astringent-conditioning and antioxidant profile. Three Carrier Variants Compared CONIUNCTA® provides Grape Leaf Extract in three water-based systems that differ in their standardization medium: Glycerin Variant (INCI: Glycerin, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Leaf Extract): The carrier is anhydrous Glycerin (≥ 99.5%) at approximately 70% of the finished product. According to the specification, this variant is also suitable for food applications. Propylene Glycol Variant (INCI: Aqua, Propylene Glycol, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Leaf Extract): Propylene Glycol/water mixture as the standardization medium. Pentylene Glycol Variant (INCI: Aqua, Pentylene Glycol, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Leaf Extract): Pentylene Glycol/water mixture as the standardization medium. All variants are clear liquids with a characteristic color; purified water serves as the extraction solvent in each case. All variants are suitable for cosmetic application; the Glycerin variant is intended for food use. An overview of further water-soluble raw materials can be found in the collection of Glycerin Extracts. Use Concentration and Food Application For cosmetics, the CDS recommends a use level of 1 to 3%; the general data sheet specification is 2 to 5%. For functional foods and beverages, 0.5 to 2% is indicated; at a use level of 1.3%, the resulting OPC content is 8.7 to 31.3 µg/mL. The data sheet describes metabolic health and the reduction of oxidative stress as targets in the food sector. We develop specific formulation and dosage recommendations on a product-by-product basis: our technical team provides individual consultation. Processing, Stability, and Storage The shelf life is 24 months when stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container. Color changes may occur during storage depending on temperature; in the event of turbidity or precipitates, filtration is possible without affecting quality. According to the SDS, the raw material is not a hazardous substance under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 and is not classified as dangerous goods. The complete TDS, SDS, and CDS are available via our technical documentation. Background information on our manufacturing process is explained on the AVE Technology page.
