FAQ
FAQ
Please read our FAQ.
Safflower extract is obtained from the flowers of the safflower plant (Carthamus tinctorius), also known as dyer's thistle. The aqueous liquid extract contains carthamin (a red pigment), safflower yellow and linoleic acid. Hydroxysafflor yellow A serves as the lead marker. INCI: Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Flower Extract.
Production
The extract is produced in Germany using AVE technology (Adaptive Vacuum Extraction). Carrier variants with glycerin, propylene glycol or pentylene glycol are available. The extract content is around 30% regardless of the variant. 1 kg of extract contains the hydrophilic and lipophilic constituents of approx. 35 g of dried or approx. 220 g of fresh plant material. The aqueous extract is free from essential oils and therefore free from declarable fragrance allergens.

Application in cosmetics
The use concentration is 2 to 5%. All carrier variants are suitable for cosmetic applications. Safflower extract is used as a natural colorant, in lip care and in nourishing formulations. Typical applications include lipsticks, blushes, body care and hair oils. The coloration varies depending on the pH of the formulation. The linoleic acid it contains is used in formulations designed to strengthen the skin barrier. From a formulation perspective, the extract fits balancing concepts and pro-age products focused on elasticity.
Application in food
The glycerin variant is suitable for food applications. Safflower is traditionally used as a natural colorant (E 164) and as a saffron substitute. Regulatory status: food and food supplements. Marketability is confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
What is safflower?
Safflower is the common name of Carthamus tinctorius, a plant also known as dyer's thistle. It has traditionally been used as a dye plant.
Is safflower extract water soluble?
Yes. The liquid extract is readily soluble in water and can be incorporated into aqueous formulations.
Which carrier variants are available?
Glycerin, propylene glycol or pentylene glycol. All variants are suitable for cosmetic applications; the glycerin variant is suitable for food. Preservation is glycol based.
How is safflower extract stored and what is its shelf life?
Stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container, the shelf life is 24 months. A change in color during storage is possible. If turbidity or precipitation occurs, filtration is sufficient. This does not affect the quality.
