Anise Extract (Pimpinella Anisum (Anise) Fruit Extract): Vicenin-2 and Vitexin from the Anise Fruit

Anis Extrakt (Pimpinella Anisum (Anise) Fruit Extract): Vicenin-2 und Vitexin aus der Anisfrucht - CONIUNCTA

The anise extract (INCI: Pimpinella Anisum (Anise) Fruit Extract) is obtained from the fruit of Pimpinella anisum and is available from CONIUNCTA® in three carrier variants: based on Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, or Pentylene Glycol. The extract is a clear, light-yellow liquid (density 1.03 to 1.06). For formulators in the cosmetic and food industries, this fruit extract combines a defined marker profile with flexible carrier systems. This product is of conventional quality.

The Anise Fruit as the Botanical Starting Point

The sole starting material is the fruit (anise fruit) of Pimpinella anisum, documented under CAS 84775-42-8. The raw material is of plant origin. The extract content is approximately 30%, regardless of the carrier variant. 1 kg of CONIUNCTA® extract contains the hydrophilic or lipophilic constituents of approximately 35 g of dried or around 220 g of fresh starting plant material.

Vicenin-2 and Vitexin as Primary Markers

The Claim Data Sheet identifies Vicenin-2 and Vitexin as the primary markers of the anise extract, with an indicative range in the product of 25 to 126 µg/mL. trans-Anethole is listed as an additional compound mentioned in the dossier (without a concentration specification in the product). The CDS further identifies the compound class of Hydroxycinnamic acids in connection with the markers of the extract. These markers serve the purpose of analytical characterisation and batch consistency.

Documented Activity Profile for Cosmetic Applications

For cosmetic applications, the CDS documents the following properties: antioxidant (ROS scavenging), UV-absorbing, skin conditioning, and tyrosinase inhibition as a target. The data sheet additionally mentions balancing properties, elasticity support, moisture-promoting activity, and glow or radiance. ROS scavenging and tyrosinase are listed as cosmetic targets. All statements are to be used in compliance with cosmetics regulations and do not replace a product-specific efficacy assessment by the user.

Three Carrier Variants for Different Formulations

The anise extract is available in three water-based or glycol-based systems, oriented towards the desired formulation approach:

  • Glycerin variant (INCI: Glycerin, Pimpinella Anisum (Anise) Fruit Extract): anhydrous glycerin (≥ 99.5%), extraction solvent purified water.
  • Propylene glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Propylene Glycol, Pimpinella Anisum (Anise) Fruit Extract): standardised in a propylene glycol/water mixture.
  • Pentylene glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Pentylene Glycol, Pimpinella Anisum (Anise) Fruit Extract): standardised in a pentylene glycol/water mixture.

All variants are suitable for cosmetic applications. The glycerin variant is intended for use in food products. Further glycerin-based extracts can be found in the corresponding collection, and additional botanical raw materials in our classic plant extracts.

Use Concentration, Storage, and Handling

The general product recommendation is a use concentration of 2 to 5%; the Claim Data Sheet specifies a range of 1 to 3% for cosmetic applications. For functional food and beverages, 0.5 to 2% is indicated. The shelf life is 24 months when stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container. According to the SDS, the anise extract is not a hazardous substance under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 and is not classified as dangerous goods. Colour changes due to temperature or storage conditions, as well as possible turbidity or precipitation, have no effect on quality; filtration is possible if required. Specific formulation and dosage questions are addressed individually by our technical team.

Documentation and Procurement for B2B Customers

For each batch, the TDS, SDS, and CDS as well as the certificate of analysis (CoA) are available via our technical documentation; individual values for pH, relative density, and refractive index can be found in the respective CoA. Formulators and procurement teams can view the anise extract in the CONIUNCTA® shop and contact us for samples or technical enquiries. Information on the manufacturing process can be found on our page on AVE technology.
