CONIUNCTA® PRO CPO-69 Ashwaganda Oil Extract is a lipophilic extract from the root of Withania somnifera. According to the data sheet, the INCI is Withania Somnifera (Ashwagandha) Root Extract. We offer the extract in three anhydrous carrier variants: sunflower oil, jojoba oil and squalane. The product is available in conventional quality and belongs to our premium line CONIUNCTA® PRO. For formulators, the extract is interesting for two main reasons: the CDS assigns it a clearly defined lead compound class, the withanolides, and documents a cosmetic claim profile around soothing, moisture-promoting and pro-age concepts. At the same time, the regulatory framework is clear: the extract is a raw material for the cosmetics industry, and food use is only possible with Novel Food authorisation.
Withanolides as lead markers: what the CDS calculates and what it does not
The CDS names the withanolides as primary markers, specifically withaferin A and withanolide D. Chemically, they are classified there as steroidal lactones and described as the characteristic compound class of the extract. For the content in the product, the CDS states a calculated range of 42 to 270 µg/g. This range is derived from three factors: a literature content of the herbal drug of 0.2 to 1 %, the extract proportion of 30 g/kg and an assumed extraction efficiency of 70 to 90 %. Important for your documentation: the value is not determined analytically, but is a calculated estimate. The CDS applies this calculation by way of example to a formulation with 3.5 % extract, arriving at 1.5 to 9.5 µg/g.
As further compounds, the CDS lists withanosides IV and V, which are described as glycosides and given a literature value of 0.1 to 0.5 %. For product developers, this means: the extract can be well described by its lead compound class, but standardisation to a fixed withanolide content is not claimed. Anyone wishing to work with marker contents in the communication of the end product should consistently adopt this distinction between calculated and analytically determined values.
Soothing, moisture-promoting, pro-age: the documented claim profile
The CDS describes the effect of the extract as “Anti-irritant, soothing”, meaning calming and irritation-reducing for the skin. In addition, it lists four supported claim areas:
- Soothing (calming)
- Moisture-promoting (hydrating)
- Skin-plumping (for a plumper-looking complexion)
- Pro-age
This makes the extract a good fit for concepts aimed at a balanced, well-cared-for and plumper-looking complexion. The CDS expressly points out that substantiation of claims in the end product is the responsibility of the responsible person, in accordance with Regulation (EC) 1223/2009, Art. 20, and the common criteria of Regulation (EU) 655/2013. The information in the data sheet thus forms the basis for your claim strategy, but does not replace the assessment of the finished formulation. In addition, according to the CDS, the extract is suitable for cosmetics under Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 and classified as vegan-suitable, which also makes it interesting for vegan product lines.
Sunflower oil, jojoba oil or squalane: three anhydrous carriers compared
All three variants are oil-based and anhydrous. According to the TDS, the respective carrier serves as the extraction and standardisation medium; the composition is approx. 70 % carrier and approx. 30 % extract. Regardless of the variant, 1 kg of CONIUNCTA® extract contains the lipophilic constituents of approx. 30 g of dried plant parts. The variants therefore differ mainly in the carrier oil and thus in the declaration:
- Sunflower oil: EU INCI Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Withania Somnifera Root Extract; Global INCI Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Withania Somnifera (Ashwagandha) Root Extract. The TDS describes a clear, light yellow to brown liquid with slight turbidity and a characteristic odour.
- Jojoba oil: EU INCI Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil, Withania Somnifera Root Extract; Global INCI Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Withania Somnifera (Ashwagandha) Root Extract.
- Squalane: EU INCI Squalane, Withania Somnifera Root Extract; Global INCI Squalane, Withania Somnifera (Ashwagandha) Root Extract.
For the jojoba oil and squalane variants, the TDS refers to the respective certificate of analysis (CoA) for colour and odour. In practice, the choice of carrier is usually a question of the overall formulation: which oils are already planned for the oil phase, which declaration is desired for marketing the end product, and what sensory profile should be achieved? If the carrier is already part of your formulation, the extract can be integrated without an additional INCI entry for another oil. You can find an overview of further oil-based extracts in our collection of sunflower oil extracts.
Application scenarios for anhydrous systems and oil phases
The data sheets state a usage range of 2 to 5 % for cosmetics. Since all variants are anhydrous, they are suitable wherever lipophilic actives are required: in face and body oils, in oil-based serums or in the oil phase of emulsions. The extract can thus play a role in product concepts that take up the documented claim profile, such as soothing care for a balanced skin feel or pro-age lines focusing on a plumper-looking complexion.
For development, it is worth looking at the notes on appearance: according to the product information, the colour may change during storage depending on temperature. If turbidity or precipitation occurs, filtration is required, without this affecting the quality of the product. For transparent end products, this aspect should be included in stability testing. Our technical team will be happy to clarify specific formulation and dosage questions for your product concept individually.
Novel Food: why the extract is purely a cosmetic raw material
For buyers from the food supplement and food sector, the regulatory status is decisive. In the food sector, the extract falls under the Novel Food Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. Use as a food is therefore only possible with authorisation. The CDS expressly states no usage concentration for food and does not support any food use; accordingly, the TDS of the sunflower oil variant notes “no food application”. CPO-69 is thus clearly positioned as a raw material for the cosmetics industry, in all three carrier variants.
Safety, storage and technical documentation
The safety data sheet does not classify the mixture as hazardous under CLP Regulation (EC) 1272/2008: no pictogram, no signal word, no H or P statements. It contains no PBT or vPvB constituents and no endocrine disruptors at or above 0.1 %. It is not considered dangerous goods for transport (ADR/RID, IMDG, IATA). As a combustible liquid, it is assigned to storage class 10 according to TRGS 510; the stated flash point of over 218 °C refers to the carrier squalane and was not determined for the mixture. The water hazard class is WGK 1 (slightly hazardous to water, self-classification according to AwSV) and applies to all carrier variants. For handling, the SDS recommends safety glasses according to EN 166; there are no occupational exposure limits according to TRGS 900. REACH registration is not required, and under Biocidal Products Regulation 528/2012 it is not a biocidal product.
For storage, the TDS specify dry conditions between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container, while the SDS states 15 to 25 °C. Under these conditions, the shelf life is 24 months. We provide the TDS, SDS and CDS of all three variants via our technical documentation; batch-specific values such as relative density can be found in the respective CoA.
