With BIOLISSE® Pentylene Glycol, CONIUNCTA® offers a defined, single-substance raw material for the cosmetics industry: the INCI name is Pentylene Glycol, chemically it is 1,2-Pentanediol (CAS 5343-92-0) with a purity of 100%. Unlike our botanical extracts, this product is not a plant extract and not a carrier-bound system, but a pure diol. For formulators, this makes it a well-characterizable, multifunctional building block with reproducible physicochemical parameters. The raw material is suitable for vegan formulations and is intended exclusively for cosmetic use in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.
Pentylene Glycol, what is it? (cos'è / pentilene glicole)
Pentylene Glycol, referred to in Italian as pentilene glicole or glicole pentilenico and in French as pentylène glycol, is a short-chain 1,2-diol. Chemically, it carries two hydroxyl groups on adjacent carbon atoms of a pentane chain, from which its characteristic combination of water-attracting and practically relevant properties is derived. In the CONIUNCTA® data sheet, the compound is clearly listed as 1,2-Pentanediol and specified with a content of 100%. It is therefore not a standardized extract fraction, but an exactly defined pure-substance molecule.
Physically, BIOLISSE® Pentylene Glycol is a colorless, transparent, and odorless liquid. It is miscible with water and soluble in alcohol and ether. The pH value of a 10 percent aqueous solution ranges between 5.0 and 7.0, with a density of 0.971 g/mL (25 °C). These parameters make the raw material predictable and facilitate its integration into aqueous and hydroalcoholic systems.
Documented properties according to the data sheet
The CONIUNCTA® data sheet describes Pentylene Glycol as having "antimicrobial and humectant properties", meaning moisture-binding and antimicrobial properties. This dual function is the reason why the diol is valued as a multifunctional raw material in cosmetics: it can contribute to the moisture-promoting orientation of a formulation while also acting on the microbiological environment of a recipe.
In addition, the data sheet lists regulatory-supported claim areas based on published literature: balancing, moisture-promoting, conditioning, skin-plumping, and pro-age. This orientation aligns with the profile of a moisture-binding diol and supports skincare-oriented concepts. All points mentioned should be understood strictly in line with the data sheet; medical or disease-related claims are explicitly not associated with them.
Why a pure diol and not a carrier extract?
Many CONIUNCTA® products are botanical extracts in aqueous or lipophilic carrier systems (glycerin or sunflower oil). BIOLISSE® Pentylene Glycol differs fundamentally from these: here there is no carrier system and no extract fraction, the product consists of 100% 1,2-Pentanediol. This gives it a different role within a formulation. Rather than acting as an active plant extract, it functions as a multifunctional building block that contributes properties of its own and can be combined with other water-soluble components.
For formulators, purity primarily means predictability: defined density, defined solubility range, and a narrow pH range of the aqueous solution. The raw material is miscible with water and can therefore be readily incorporated into the water phase of cosmetic systems. Precipitation or slight turbidity may occur depending on storage and temperature and can be resolved by filtration without affecting quality.
Fields of application and positioning within the portfolio
BIOLISSE® Pentylene Glycol can be classified as a multifunctional raw material in various cosmetic systems, for example in water-based skincare products where moisture-promoting and microbiologically relevant properties are desired. The claim areas listed in the data sheet (balancing, moisture-promoting, conditioning, skin-plumping, pro-age) indicate the typical orientation. The specific design of a formulation depends on the individual conditions of the respective formulator; we deliberately do not provide binding formulation or dosage instructions here.
Within the CONIUNCTA® range, this defined diol meaningfully complements our botanical series. Those building water-soluble concepts will find suitable plant-based partners in our glycerin extracts; for lipophilic approaches, the sunflower oil extracts offer a broad spectrum. An overview of the entire range is provided by the product list.
Safety, regulatory status, and documentation
According to the safety data sheet, BIOLISSE® Pentylene Glycol is not a hazardous substance under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008: no pictogram, no signal word, no H- or P-statements required. The substance is not a PBT/vPvB substance, shows no endocrine-disrupting properties according to the regulations consulted, and is not classified as dangerous goods under ADR/RID, IMDG, and IATA. Under normal conditions, no special precautions are required for handling; safety goggles are recommended, and vapors and aerosols should not be inhaled.
For storage, the data sheet recommends 15 to 25 °C in originally sealed containers, protected from direct sunlight and moisture; shelf life is 36 months unopened. Full parameters are available to registered customers through our technical documentation (TDS, SDS, CDS). Details on our production can be found on the AVE technology page.
