Aloe Extract (Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract): Acemannan as Key Marker for Moisturising Formulations

CONIUNCTA®

The Aloe Extract (INCI: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract) from CONIUNCTA® is obtained from the leaf of Aloe barbadensis and is available in three carrier variants: Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, and Pentylene Glycol. This allows the extract to be flexibly incorporated into a variety of aqueous systems. For formulators in the cosmetic and food industries, the documented Acemannan content is of particular importance, as it makes this leaf extract analytically tangible. Acemannan as an analytically verified key marker In the CDS, Acemannan, a polysaccharide, is listed as the primary marker of the Aloe Extract. The indicative content in the product is 1.4 to 5 mg/mL. At a use concentration of 3% in a cosmetic formulation, this calculates to 42.0 to 150 µg/mL Acemannan in the finished formula; at 1.3% use in food applications, this corresponds to 17.5 to 62.5 µg/mL. These values enable traceable marker control through dosing. As an additional identified compound, the CDS lists Aloin (Barbaloin, an anthraquinone) at 0.1 to 0.5%. The regulatory limit of a maximum of 50 ppm in cosmetics must be observed here and should be taken into account during formulation. Documented activity profile The claims documented for the Aloe Extract are soothing, nourishing, and moisturising. The CDS additionally lists the regulatory claims Balancing, Soothing, Elasticity support, Moisturising, and Conditioning. The targets recorded include mannose receptors, fibroblast proliferation, and metabolic aspects (metabolic health, oxidative stress reduction). For the food sector, the CDS references the properties as nutritional antioxidant and traditional dietary ingredient. All statements closely follow the information substantiated in the data sheet and must be used within the framework of applicable law. Three carrier variants for different systems The extract is available in three water-soluble carrier systems: Glycerin variant (INCI: Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract): Anhydrous Glycerin (greater than or equal to 99.5%) constitutes approximately 70% of the finished product; the extraction solvent purified water does not remain in the final product. Propylene Glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Propylene Glycol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract): Composition of approximately 40% water, approximately 30% extract, and approximately 30% Propylene Glycol. Pentylene Glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Pentylene Glycol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract): Pentylene Glycol/water blend as the carrier system. Regardless of the variant, the extract content is approximately 30%. According to the product facts, the Glycerin variant is also suitable for food applications; all variants are suitable for cosmetics. Additional water-soluble options can be found in our overview of glycerin-based extracts. Specifications and use concentration The Aloe Extract is liquid, with a colour ranging from amber to light brown and a density of 1.03 to 1.06. The recommended use concentration in cosmetics is 2 to 5% (stated in the CDS with an overall range of 1 to 5%); for functional food and beverages, the CDS specifies 0.5 to 2%. The shelf life is 24 months when stored dry between 10 and 30 degrees C in the original sealed container. As noted in the disclaimer, colour changes depending on temperature and storage time may occur; in the event of turbidity or precipitation, filtration is possible without affecting quality. According to the SDS, the extract is not a hazardous substance under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 and is not a UN dangerous good. Manufacturing and technical documentation The extract is manufactured using the proprietary AVE Technology (Adaptive Vacuum Extraction). The complete data sheets (TDS, SDS, CDS) as well as batch-specific certificates of analysis are available to registered customers via the technical documentation. Specific pH, density, and refractive index values are reported on a batch-by-batch basis in the CoA.
