Snow Mushroom Extract (INCI: Tremella Fuciformis Extract) is a liquid, polysaccharide-rich preparation derived from the fruiting body of Tremella fuciformis. CONIUNCTA® offers the extract in three water-based carrier variants: with Glycerin, with Propylene Glycol/Water, and with Pentylene Glycol/Water. In all variants, the extract content is approximately 30%. The product is of conventional quality and suitable for all cosmetic applications; for food use, Novel Food status applies pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. For formulators, the extract is of particular interest due to its high polysaccharide content and the resulting functional properties.
Glucuronoxylomannan as the Characteristic Polysaccharide Marker
The central marker of Snow Mushroom Extract is the Tremella polysaccharides, in particular glucuronoxylomannan. In the product, these are indicatively reported in the CDS at 14 to 23.3 mg/mL. In the dried starting material, literature values (Wu et al. 2019) document contents of 50 to 70%. These high-molecular-weight polysaccharides define the functional profile of the extract. At a use concentration of 3%, this corresponds to a calculated 420 to 699 µg/mL polysaccharides in the finished formulation. No additional compounds are separately documented in the CDS, meaning the functional description remains closely tied to the polysaccharide system.
Documented Properties for Skin Care
According to the CDS, the following cosmetic properties are documented for Snow Mushroom Extract: moisturising, film-forming, wound healing support, anti-ageing, balancing, skin-plumping, and pro-age. The CDS lists mannose receptors, fibroblast proliferation, metabolic health, and the reduction of oxidative stress as application areas and targets.
The film-forming and moisture-binding properties of the Tremella polysaccharides make the extract a valuable component for formulations targeting skin feel, hydration, and a well-groomed appearance. The terms referenced in marketing keywords (skin-caring, moisturising, anti-ageing) are consistent in substance with the CDS claims; however, they should always be used in accordance with cosmetics regulations and on the basis of one's own product testing.
Three Carrier Variants for Different Formulation Approaches
The three carrier variants differ in composition and INCI declaration, facilitating selection according to the formulation concept:
- Glycerin variant: INCI Glycerin, Tremella Fuciformis Extract; Glycerin (≥ 99.5%) as approximately 70% of the finished product, extract approx. 30%.
- Propylene Glycol variant: INCI Aqua (Water), Propylene Glycol, Tremella Fuciformis Extract; composition approx. 40% water, 30% extract, 30% Propylene Glycol.
- Pentylene Glycol variant: INCI Aqua, Pentylene Glycol, Tremella Fuciformis Extract; composition approx. 50% water, 30% extract, 20% Pentylene Glycol.
All variants are water-based, clear liquids with a characteristic colour and a recommended use concentration of 2 to 5%. An overview of further water-soluble raw materials can be found in our category of glycerin extracts.
Snow Mushroom in the Context of Our Mushroom Extracts
Tremella fuciformis (Snow Mushroom / Snow Fungus) forms part of the CONIUNCTA® portfolio of botanical and mycological raw materials. The extract is derived from the mushroom and is of plant origin (vegetal). Further specialities from this product group can be found in our collection of mushroom extracts. Our extracts are manufactured using the proprietary AVE technology (Adaptive Vacuum Extraction), Made in Germany.
Stability, Storage and Safety
Snow Mushroom Extract has a shelf life of 24 months when stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container. Density is in the range of 1.03 to 1.06; colour is described as amber to light brown. Colour changes may occur during storage depending on temperature; in the event of turbidity or precipitation, filtration is possible without affecting quality. According to the SDS, the product is not a hazardous substance within the meaning of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008: no pictograms, no signal word, no UN dangerous goods classification. Skin protection is not required; eye protection is recommended.
Documentation and Enquiry
Complete technical documentation is available for each carrier variant. TDS, SDS and CDS, as well as batch-specific certificates of analysis (pH, relative density and refractive index per CoA), are available to registered customers in the technical documentation area. Our technical team is available for individual consultation on selecting the appropriate carrier variant and on questions regarding integration into your formulation.
