FAQ
FAQ

Bitter Orange Extract is a liquid flower extract of bitter orange (Citrus aurantium var. amara) for the cosmetics and food industry. The INCI name is Citrus Aurantium Amara (Bitter Orange) Flower Extract. Characteristic constituents are naringin, hesperidin and bitter substances.
Production
The extract is produced in Germany using Adaptive Vacuum Extraction (AVE technology). Three carrier variants are available: glycerin, propylene glycol or pentylene glycol, each in combination with water. The extract content is approx. 30 percent regardless of the variant. 1 kg of extract contains the hydrophilic or lipophilic constituents of approx. 35 g of dried or approx. 220 g of fresh plant parts. The aqueous extract is free from essential oils and therefore free from declarable fragrance allergens.

Application in cosmetics
The recommended use concentration is 2 to 5 percent. All three carrier variants are suitable for cosmetic formulations according to Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009. Thanks to its good water solubility, the extract can be incorporated directly into the water phase. Typical applications are cellulite gels, body creams, firming body care and aromatic products. In formulations, the extract is used as an antioxidant and moisturizing component.
Application in food
The glycerin variant is intended for food applications; the respective carrier is declared in the list of ingredients. In the food sector, bitter orange is traditionally used for marmalades, liqueurs and bittering agents. Applicable maximum synephrine levels must be observed depending on the application.
