The Guarana powder extract is a dry extract obtained from the seeds of the Amazonian plant guarana (Paullinia cupana, INCI Paullinia Cupana Seed Extract, CAS 84929-28-2). As a powder extract with a 10:1 ratio it carries Caffeine as its lead marker and serves as a botanical raw material for the cosmetics and food industries.

Guarana is processed into a fine powder extract with a drug to extract ratio of 10:1, with the caffeine content serving as the lead marker. According to the CDS, the lead marker is Caffeine with a calculated range of 50–220 mg/g. The product is unpreserved and is supplied as a light brown powder that is dispersible in water. Application in cosmetics
For cosmetic formulations a usage concentration of 0.5 to 2 % is recommended. As it is dispersible in water, the powder extract can be incorporated into aqueous phases, gels and emulsions and is suitable for body and face care formulations. The raw material is suitable for all cosmetic product types. Since it is supplied unpreserved, the formulation requires its own preservation system. The light brown intrinsic colour may influence the colour of the finished product.
Application in food
The Guarana powder extract can be used under food law and, as it is dispersible in water, can be incorporated into liquid preparations. Validation is recommended before use in food (see TDS). For caffeinated products, compliance with the permitted maximum levels and the required labelling is the responsibility of the manufacturing company.
