FAQ
FAQ
Please read our FAQ.
Hibiscus extract (INCI: Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract, CAS 84775-96-2) is an aqueous liquid extract from the flowers of Hibiscus sabdariffa, also known as karkade. The extract contains organic acids such as hibiscus acid, citric acid and malic acid, along with anthocyanins and mucilage. These natural AHAs define the exfoliating and skin-renewing properties of this raw material in cosmetic formulations.
Production
CONIUNCTA produces the hibiscus extract in Germany using AVE technology (Adaptive Vacuum Extraction), made in Germany. The extract content is approx. 30% regardless of the variant. 1 kg of extract contains the hydrophilic or lipophilic constituents of approx. 35 g of dried or approx. 220 g of fresh plant material. The extract is available in three carrier variants: Glycerin, Propylene Glycol or Pentylene Glycol. The raw material is sourced from Europe and the rest of the world, with certified organic material preferred.

Use in cosmetics
The use level is 2 to 5%. All carrier variants are suitable for cosmetic applications. Typical formulations include peelings, facial toners, hair treatments and body lotions. The fruit acids are used for natural AHA peeling and in hair care, and the raw material brings antioxidant and skin-conditioning properties to the formulation. The aqueous extract is free from essential oils and therefore free from declarable fragrance allergens. The red pigmentation of the anthocyanins can have a coloring effect in formulations.
Use in food
The Glycerin variant is suitable for food applications. Hibiscus is established worldwide as karkade tea, and its use as a natural red colorant and in beverages is widely documented. Regulatory status: food (tea, karkade).
Frequently asked questions
What is Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract?
Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract is the INCI name for the extract from the flowers of Hibiscus sabdariffa (karkade). It contains organic acids, anthocyanins and mucilage and is used as a raw material for the cosmetics and food industries.
Which carriers is hibiscus extract available in?
The liquid extract is available in Glycerin, Propylene Glycol or Pentylene Glycol. All variants are suitable for cosmetics, the Glycerin variant for food. Preservation is glycol-based.
Is hibiscus extract water-soluble?
Yes. The extract is readily soluble in water and is supplied as a clear liquid that may show slight turbidity. If turbidity or precipitation occurs during storage, simple filtration is sufficient. This does not affect the quality of the product.
How is hibiscus extract stored and how long does it keep?
When stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container, the shelf life is 24 months. A temperature-dependent color change during storage is possible and has no effect on quality.
Which documents are available for the hibiscus extract?
A technical data sheet (TDS) is available for each carrier variant, along with a safety data sheet (SDS). Certificates of analysis (CoA) and B2B terms are available to customers after login. The delivery time is 7 to 14 days, shipped in a plastic container.
