Burdock Root Extract (INCI: Arctium Lappa Root Extract, CAS 84012-13-5) is an aqueous plant extract from the root of greater burdock (Arctium lappa). The primary marker is the lignan arctiin, and the root also contains inulin. CONIUNCTA supplies burdock root extract as a B2B raw material for the cosmetics and food industries.
Manufacturing
It is produced using CONIUNCTA's Adaptive Vacuum Extraction (AVE), Made in Germany. The extract content is around 30%. One kilogram of extract contains the hydrophilic constituents of approx. 30 g of dried plant material. The raw material is available in three carrier variants: glycerin, propylene glycol and pentylene glycol. No preservatives are added to any variant; propylene glycol and pentylene glycol have an antimicrobial effect.

Cosmetic applications
The typical use concentration is 2 to 5%. Burdock root extract is used in formulations for hair care and the scalp as well as in skin care products. The cosmetic properties of the raw material include scalp-soothing, hair-conditioning and moisturising. The content of fragrance allergens according to Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 cannot be derived from the available data; analysis on request (GC-MS or HPLC). Typical formulations are hair tonics, shampoos and scalp care.
Food applications
The glycerin variant can be used under food law. For food supplements only: the EU Novel Food Catalogue (POL-NF-00145) lists this plant part as not novel only in food supplements. The ingredients according to Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 are listed in the section “Composition (1169/2011)”. The raw material is supplied as a liquid extract to processing companies.
