FAQ
FAQ
Please read our FAQ.
Lemon balm extract (INCI: Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract, CAS 84082-61-1) is an aqueous liquid extract from the leaves of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis). It contains rosmarinic acid, flavonoids and triterpenes as water-soluble marker compounds. The lemon balm extract is a raw material for the cosmetics and food industry and is available in three carrier variants.
Production
CONIUNCTA produces the extract in Germany using AVE technology (Adaptive Vacuum Extraction), Made in Germany. The aqueous extraction yields an extract without essential oils, so declarable fragrance allergens are avoided. The extract content is approximately 30 % across all variants. 1 kg of extract contains the hydrophilic or lipophilic components of approximately 35 g of dried or approximately 220 g of fresh plant parts. Glycerin, propylene glycol and pentylene glycol are available as carriers. The raw material comes from Europe and the rest of the world, with certified organic material preferred.

Use in cosmetics
The recommended use concentration is 2-5 %. All three carrier variants are suitable for cosmetic formulations. Typical applications include soothing facial care, lip balms and night creams. The extract is also used in formulations with an astringent and pore-refining profile. Thanks to its good water solubility, it can be incorporated directly into the water phase.
Use in food
The glycerin-based variant is suitable for food applications. In the food sector, lemon balm is traditionally established as a tea, and the regulatory status is food (tea). The technical data sheet provides information on composition and declaration.
Frequently asked questions
What is Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract?
Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract is the INCI name for extract from lemon balm leaves. The CONIUNCTA raw material is an aqueous liquid extract with rosmarinic acid, flavonoids and triterpenes, dissolved in glycerin, propylene glycol or pentylene glycol.
What is lemon balm extract used for in skin care?
Formulators use the extract for soothing facial care, lip balms and night creams. It is also used in formulations with an astringent and pore-refining profile. The usual use concentration is 2-5 %.
Which carrier variant is suitable for food?
The glycerin-based variant is suitable for food. All three variants can be used in cosmetics. Preservation is glycol-based.
Is lemon balm extract vegan and water-soluble?
Yes. The extract is vegan and readily soluble in water. This allows it to be incorporated directly into the water phase of formulations.
How long does the extract keep and which documents are available?
When stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the originally sealed container, the shelf life is 24 months. Colour changes are possible during storage, and any cloudiness that forms can be filtered off without loss of quality.
