Lion's Mane Extract (INCI: Hericium Erinaceum Extract) is a liquid extract from the bearded tooth mushroom (Hericium erinaceum), also known as lion's mane. The mushroom's characteristic constituents are erinacines and hericenones. The extract carries the CAS number 223749-83-5 and is supplied as a raw material for the cosmetics industry.
Production
The extract is produced using CONIUNCTA's Adaptive Vacuum Extraction (AVE) in Germany (Made in Germany). The extract content is around 30 %. One kilogram of extract contains the hydrophilic and lipophilic components of about 35 g of dried or about 220 g of fresh plant material. Available carrier options are water-based glycerin, propylene glycol and pentylene glycol. Preservation is glycol-based.

Use in cosmetics
The recommended use concentration is 2 to 5 %. Lion's Mane Extract is used in serums and creams for mature skin, in regenerating care concepts and in scalp care. The aqueous extract is free from essential oils and therefore free from declarable fragrance allergens. It can be used as a cosmetic raw material in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 and is suitable for all carrier options.
Use in food
For food use, Lion's Mane Extract is classified as a novel food under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. Use in food in the EU requires authorization, which is currently not available.
