Marshmallow Extract (INCI: Althaea Officinalis Root Extract, CAS 73049-65-7) is a liquid plant extract obtained from the root of the marsh mallow (Althaea officinalis). In German-speaking markets the raw material is also known as Eibisch Extrakt. The primary markers are the mucilage polysaccharides of the root, which give the extract its film-forming and moisturizing properties.
Manufacturing
At CONIUNCTA, the marshmallow extract is produced using Adaptive Vacuum Extraction (AVE) and is made in Germany. It is available in three carrier variants: in glycerin, in a propylene glycol/water system and in a pentylene glycol/water system. Across all variants, the extract content is around 30 %. 1 kg of extract contains the hydrophilic components of about 35 g of dried or around 220 g of fresh plant material.

Use in cosmetics
The recommended use concentration is 2 to 5 %. All carrier variants are suitable for cosmetic formulations. The mucilage polysaccharides act as a film former and provide moisture. In line with the claim areas under EC 655/2013, the extract is associated with astringent, balancing, anti-aging and skin-plumping (plump skin appearance) properties. As an aqueous extract, it is free of essential oils and therefore free of declarable fragrance allergens. Typical formulations include care for sensitive skin, moisturizing creams, baby care, lip care, face creams and after-shave.
Use in food
The glycerin variant is suitable for use in food. For functional food and beverages, the product documentation states a use concentration of 0.5 to 2 %.
