Sage Extract (Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract) - classic astringent rich in rosmarinic acid and tannins (CAS: 84082-79-1)
INCI: Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract. Sage extract (Salvia officinalis, CAS 84082-79-1) is obtained by aqueous extraction and contains rosmarinic acid, carnosolic acid, tannins and flavonoids. These water-soluble polyphenols define the astringent and antioxidant profile.
Application in the cosmetics industry
The aqueous extract is free from essential oils and therefore free from declarable fragrance allergens. In the cosmetics industry, sage extract is used for deodorants and astringent skin care. The tannins have an antiperspirant and antimicrobial effect. Typical applications include deodorant sprays, foot care and mouthwashes.
Use in the food industry
Sage is traditionally used as a spice and tea in the food industry. Its use in Mediterranean cuisine is well documented. Its antiperspirant effect is known in folk medicine. Regulatory status: food/spice.
