The CONIUNCTA® Nettle Extract (INCI: Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract) is a botanical liquid extract from Urtica dioica. Chlorogenic acid serves as the lead marker with an indicative range of 122 to 630 µg/mL in the product. The extract is available in three carrier variants (Glycerin, Propylene Glycol and Pentylene Glycol), making it compatible with a variety of cosmetic and food-grade formulation environments. For formulators, the product is a versatile botanical building block with a documented antioxidative profile. This is a product of conventional quality.
Chlorogenic Acid as Analytical Lead Marker
The characterisation centres on chlorogenic acid, whose indicative content in the product ranges from 122 to 630 µg/mL. At a use concentration of 2 %, the extract delivers a calculated 2.4 to 12.6 µg/mL chlorogenic acid in the finished formulation; at a food application level of 1.3 %, this corresponds to 1.5 to 7.9 µg/mL. These figures enable a traceable link between the amount used and the marker content in the final product.
In addition to the primary marker, the CDS documents further confirmed compounds: Scopoletin at 0.02 to 0.08 % (relative to the dry plant) and beta-Sitosterol at 0.1 to 0.5 % (in the root). These accompanying substances complete the compositional profile of the extract.
Documented Activity Profile
The CDS lists several documented effects and regulatory claims for the Nettle Extract. These include antioxidative properties (ROS scavenging), UV-absorbing activity in the range of 290 to 320 nm, and an anti-aging approach targeting MMP-1 inhibition. The properties balancing, moisture-promoting, conditioning and skin-plumping are also documented.
As cosmetic targets, the data sheet specifies ROS scavenging, MMP-1 and UV absorption. For formulators, this provides starting points for antioxidatively oriented skin care and hair care concepts. We intentionally present these statements in close alignment with the data sheet and without any medical interpretation.
Three Carrier Variants for Different Systems
The extract is available in three carrier systems, each described by its own technical data sheet:
- Glycerin variant (INCI: Glycerin, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract): Glycerin accounts for approx. 70 % of the finished product, the extract fraction for approx. 30 %; the extraction solvent is purified water, which does not remain in the final product.
- Propylene Glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Propylene Glycol, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract): Composition of approx. 40 % water, 30 % extract and 30 % Propylene Glycol; CAS No. 84012-40-8.
- Pentylene Glycol variant (INCI: Aqua, Pentylene Glycol, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract): Pentylene Glycol/water mixture as the standardisation medium; extraction likewise via purified water.
Regardless of the variant, the extract content is approx. 30 %. The choice of carrier variant can be made according to the specific requirements of your formulation. An overview of further water-soluble systems can be found in our category of glycerin extracts.
Use Concentration and Fields of Application
The product data sheet states a general use concentration of 2 to 5 %. The CDS differentiates this by application: 1 to 3 % is recommended for cosmetics, and 0.5 to 2 % for functional food and beverages. In the food sector, the extract targets metabolic health and reduction of oxidative stress according to the data sheet. The glycerin variant is intended for food applications; all variants are suitable for cosmetic applications. We do not provide specific formulation recommendations; our technical team is available for individual consultation.
Specification, Storage and Safety
The extract is a clear, light-green liquid with a characteristic colour and a density of 1.03 to 1.06. The shelf life is 24 months when stored dry between 10 and 30 °C in the original sealed container. Colour changes may occur during storage depending on temperature; in the event of turbidity or precipitation, filtration is possible without affecting product quality. According to the SDS summary, the product is not a hazardous substance within the meaning of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, is not a UN dangerous good, and has no PBT/vPvB properties. It complies with REACH Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006. The complete technical documentation is available via our technical documentation page; individual values such as pH and refractive index can be found in the respective CoA.
