Bitter clover extract is a plant-based liquid extract from the leaves of bogbean (Menyanthes trifoliata). The lead marker is the secoiridoid glycoside loganin. Under the INCI name Menyanthes Trifoliata Leaf Extract (CAS 84082-63-3), the raw material is offered for cosmetic formulations and food applications.
Production
The extract is obtained using Adaptive Vacuum Extraction (AVE) and produced in Germany (Made in Germany). Depending on the variant, the extract content is around 30 percent. One kilogram of extract contains the hydrophilic components of approx. 30 g of dried plant parts. Available carriers are glycerin, propylene glycol and pentylene glycol. Preservation: glycerin variant: none added; propylene glycol variant: none added, propylene glycol has an antimicrobial effect; pentylene glycol variant: none added, pentylene glycol has an antimicrobial effect.

Use in cosmetics
The typical use concentration is 2 to 5 percent. The content of fragrance allergens according to Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 cannot be derived from the available data; analysis on request (GC-MS or HPLC). In formulations, bitter clover extract is used for its astringent, balancing and protective properties as well as with regard to skin elasticity. Typical formulation types are facial toners, clarifying masks and body care.
Use in food
